So you child wants to get their own fixie and your worried about safety! It's a valid concern, they are not the safest of rides and bicycle accidents are common and can be deadly. The best advice we can give is to make sure your son or daughter wears a helmet at all times. If they don't like helmets, take them to a trendy bike shop in Fitzroy or wherever and let them pick the coolest helmet they can find and you can be sure they'll never leave the house without it! Don't concern yourself with cost; it’s a small price to pay for safety. Secondly, if you can get away with talking them into a single speed over a fixed gear, all the better! They are much safer. And remember, having your child out on a bike is not the worst thing that can happen! They out doing exercise and they've got a healthy hobby to focus on which always helps to keep them away from drugs and alcohol. I'd much prefer my son to be out riding a fixie, than sitting in basement somewhere playing video games and smoking a bong!
